I did a deletion experiment this week: turned off auto-memory entirely and results improved. On closer inspection it had accumulated a ton of one-off corrections as durable user-preferences and removing it reduced token use and a mess of contradictory instructions that agents had written for themselves.

Stale rules are findable. The harder problem is silent contradictions. Auto-memory writes a preference, you update the vault manually, neither knows. The audit comes back clean because both instructions look intentional on their own.
